SafePet Ontario has received a $55,000 grant from PetSmart Charities of Canada, one of the country’s leading funders of animal welfare. The grant will be used to expand the SafePet Ontario program to more communities across the province and to support a province-wide foster network for the pets of individuals fleeing domestic violence.
Research shows that many survivors of domestic abuse won’t leave their abuser if they can’t take their pet with them to safety. According to a 2017 study from the University of Windsor:
- 89 per cent of abused women say their partner also abused a pet.
- 56 per cent of women delayed leaving an abusive relationship due to fear for a pet’s safety.
- 47 per cent say they would have left a relationship earlier if they could have taken a pet with them.
- 33 per cent say they considered returning to an abuser because their partner had the pet.
Administered by the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association, the SafePet Ontario program helps people and pets find safety sooner by coordinating foster care for the pets of survivors fleeing domestic violence.
Foster families play a vital role to help ensure that no pet is left behind in an abusive environment. Funding from this new grant will help to grow the program’s network of foster families across the province to provide temporary care for pets in need.
“Far too often, individuals feel they have no choice than to remain in an abusive environment out of fear of what may happen to their beloved pet,” says Dani LaGiglia, regional relationship manager at PetSmart Charities of Canada. “We are proud to support the SafePet Ontario program, which ensures pet guardians experiencing domestic violence don’t have to choose between leaving their pet behind and their own safety.”
